Q & A with the lovely Gillian from The Little Cupcakery!
Give us a little background to who you are, what you do and how you ended up there.
I am Gillian, a wife, a mum, a teacher and a wedding cake designer.…life is busy!! I started my business in the summer of 2012 when my friend Lucy persuaded me to make her wedding cupcakes! At first I made mini cupcakes but everyone kept asking if I would make them a cake and so eventually after a lot of practise and eating a lot of sample cake recipes, I launched my celebration and wedding cake collections.
What do you love most about your job?
All of it…apart from the washing up! I love the creative process. I love meeting brides and discussing their wedding and bringing it all together in cake form. I adore designing and baking wedding cakes and creating each and every little sugar flower that adorns the final display.
Is there a popular cake or does each bride want something different?
Generally brides want a cake that is going to appeal to all their guests. I offer a different flavour/tier and so often they get 3/4 choices of cake. My most popular would definitely be the Strawberry & Champagne-light and fresh and perfect after a wedding meal.
Would you recommend anywhere for brides to look for inspiration?
There is a wealth of information in magazine form, blogs and online. Pinterest is a great starting point to get ideas of the kind of design that you might like…and even the kind you don’t! But don’t worry if you cant decide-if you bring a few ideas to your consultation a good designer will be able to look and listen to your thoughts and suggest some ideas for you. Try starting here https://uk.pinterest.com/tlcni/
Have you any advice for brides on choosing their cake?
Choose something that you will enjoy and love to eat. It is your day and it is important that you love your cake! Don’t order a sugarpaste cake if you are one of those people who pick off the icing and leave it on the plate! There are other options such as chocolate ganache, a naked cake or buttercream. The choice is yours.
What did you enjoy most about your wedding day?
Definitely having all the people that we loved the most in the one room altogether! Waltzing with my Grandpa would have to be up there too-a memory that I will treasure forever.
How early should I book my cake?
You can never be too early-especially if you are having a summer wedding or a Saturday. Good cake designers will be booked up more than a year in advance. If there is someone in particular that you would like to design your cake get in touch and see if they are free. I take names and then a small deposit nearer the time to secure your date. Then we meet and chat over coffee and cake
How can brides get in touch?
Best way is via email at email@example.com or via message on

Lots of love,
Hi everyone 🙂
Some of you may have already met me, and some may meet me in the future. I have been at Ivory & Pearl / Willow & Thread since the summer… But boy do I now know what “wedding season” actually means. Ivory & Pearl is so busy at the moment, not only do we have brides finding their gown for their weddings next year (and some last minute brides for this summer) but we also have all the alterations and bridal collections taking place. Plus Easter is this weekend… where has the time gone, it feels like it was Christmas just 2 minutes ago!
I am really enjoying seeing brides coming to see their actual wedding dresses for the first time before their big day – it’s all very exciting! They are excited but also a little nervous which is to be expected as many brides haven’t laid eyes on their dress for several months! I love seeing the emotion when brides put their dresses on, it then becomes all very real as this is THE dress, it’s not just one of our dresses but it is their dress now that they will be walking down the aisle in, in just few weeks time!
There’s so much more to weddings than I ever could have imagined! We’ve been flat out with Sample Sales and Designer Weekends. And this weekend we have our last Designer Weekend for now, Naomi Neoh. I adore these dresses, the fabric the structure, they are so romantic and elegant! So DATES… Friday 25th & Saturday 26th, Saturday is fully booked at the moment but we do have a few spaces left on Friday if you would like an appointment to view this collection please ring the boutique on 02891871135
So what am I doing over Easter – WELL my cousin is getting married this Saturday and I am so excited! It is the loveliest of occasions watching two people make a lasting promise to each other surrounded by all their loved ones. It really is the best day and I can’t wait to see how stunning she will look in her wedding dress. I am looking forward to spending my Easter weekend in the luxury of the Galgorm Hotel! I love this hotel, especially their spa! I have never been there for a wedding before but I have heard it’s fabulous and it will be a very special occasion.
What I am wearing – I got my own outfit from The Boudoir, it’s a beautiful off the shoulder Eden Row dress and I also hired a headpiece from there to match, I got my bag from Zara and my shoes are ted baker – so I can’t wait to get dressed up myself! I am getting my hair done by Hedonist Hair situated in Botanic Avenue and make up by the talented Jennifer Ireland so I really can’t wait to get pampered. I also just got my hair coloured for the first time in nearly a year by the lovely Emma Crawford, she is based just outside Comber at Pearhill tree and her studio is delightful with the added extra of a cup of tea and caramel square. I would definitely recommend paying her a visit.
It is then my birthday the following Wednesday so i have a lot to look forward to!
Whatever you are up to I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing Easter break and all the wedding preparations are coming along nicely!
Lots of love,
So what is a designer weekend?
It’s Designer Weekend Season here at Ivory & Pearl! We’re hosting one every few weeks, and we’ve realized that lots of you ladies don’t really know what one entails. So just what exactly IS a Designer Weekend???
Basically, a Designer Weekend just means we get lots of a designer’s wedding dresses for a weekend, and we are able to give a discount for those orders placed during the weekend.
Here’s an example:
The Naomi Neoh Designer Weekend is coming up at the end of March (29th-30th March 2014). In the boutique on a normal day, we have about 8 wedding dresses by Naomi Neoh. During the Designer Weekend, the designer sends us lots and lots of wedding dresses, sometimes the entire current collection! So if you go ga-ga over one of the Naomi Neoh wedding gowns, we give you up to 10% off if you place your order that weekend. Woot Woot!
On the 11th – 14th April 2014, we are also very, VERY excited to have the brand spanking new Claire Pettibone Still Life collection in the boutique. We are also big lovers of Claire Pettibone, and are super excited to see this collection in real life and on all you lovely brides! Ivory & Pearl are the sole stockist of Claire Pettibone in Northern Ireland, so you might find your dream dress that nobody else in Northern Ireland even has!
As well, as the designers we usually stock we are having one super duper special weekend, on the 21st-23rd March, as Ivory & Pearl are the first bridal boutique in Europe (!!!) to host a designer weekend for Cocoe Voci!! Take a nosey at their site www.cocoevoci.com
As these are special designer weekends, we like to give you a little longer to ‘ooo and ahhh’ over the dresses, so you’ll have up to an hour and fifteen to flounce around and twirl until your heart is content!
If there’s a Naomi Neoh or Claire Pettibone gown that you’ve been dying to try and we don’t have it in-store, let us know and we can request that it be sent their Designer Weekend. Just make sure you give us enough time to make arrangements!
In a nutshell, we love Designer Weekends. Come see what all the fun is about this season, book an appointment on: 02891871135 or by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Cocoe Voci: 21st-22nd March 2014
Naomi Neoh: 29th – 30th March 2014
